An impact resistant SPS crash deck was designed for a tension leg platform which increased the impact resistance of the structure and resisted loads without penetration. The specification defined the energy absorption capability as 765 kJ which is associated with a 3MT basket dropped at a height of 26m above the deck. Also a 2.7MT and a 2.3MT driller riser type dropped from a height of 17m above the deck and impact with energies of 450kJ and 384kJ, respectively.
Trust SPS Technology for Impact Resistance
It also had to resist the operating service loads from a guideline winch skid and a blowout preventer. The deck could be no higher than 300mm with a maximum weight of 135 tonnes and had to be removable.
Jonny Lim, Director, SPS Technology Asia oversaw the project. He observed, “It is another innovative solution delivered. SPS crash deck protection – a “Lego” system for the offshore industry.”
SPS Technology, DNV- GL, Technip Malaysia and Sabah Shell Petroleum Co. Ltd. Malaysia co-authored a paper, ‘Dropped Object SPS Impact Protection Deck For Well Bay Area’, which was delivered by DNV-GL at PRAD 2016.
SPS Technology has extensive experience applying Special Application impact resistance in diverse scenarios, such as the Transocean Helideck Strengthening and our Project Denison Impact Resistant Deck.
Experiments have been carried out and you can view our Rock Drop Test video on YouTube, as well as our dramatic Pop Up Crash Panel video.
”Excellent professionalism was demonstrated throughout the project. The project was delivered with perfect safety and quality values.
