Serpentine Pavilion season is back again! And this year, we’ve been amazed by architect Marina Tabassum Architects incredible A Capsule in Time construction, named for its two beautiful, light-filled half-capsules. Keep reading to find out more!

The 24th Serpentine Pavilion

Marina’s A Capsule in Time sits along the north-south axis of the Gallery park and aligns with the Serpentine’s South’s bell tower. The design was inspired by summer park-going and features arched garden canopies that filter daylight through green foliage – very dreamy if we do say so ourselves!

One incredible detail of this construction is its kinetic element where one of the capsules is able to move and connect to a different area of the Pavilion, completely transforming it into a new, weatherproof space in a twelve minute transition.

We encourage everyone to take the time to experience this year’s Pavilion by Marina Tabassum!

A Shared Space for Creativity

We were fortunate enough to attend the Pavilion’s opening event alongside a wonderful gathering that included previous Pavilion architects, such as Lina Ghotmeh, Minsuk Cho, and Sumayya Vally.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the expert team at Stage One who executed the construction of Marina’s concept perfectly. Additionally, a huge thank you to the impressive Serpentine team for bringing it all together!

As ever, SPS Technology was proud to play a role in this iconic project, with our own CEO, David Glover, invited to act as Technical Consultant for the Gallery’s team. Here’s what David had to say about this year’s experience:

The translucent skin of the Pavilion creates a sophisticated structural envelope that fulfils many of the brief's goals: protection from London's weather, the challenges of sustainability, and – perhaps most importantly – beauty. It's a great example of how temporary architecture can achieve both usefulness and efficiency.
