SPS Technology’s structural composite Sandwich Plate System (SPS) overlay panels were used for FPSO safety repairs in the form of side shell impact protection on the starboard side during the conversion of the VLCC M/V Sunrise IV to FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis MV22.

SPS is ideally suited for side shell impact protection against cargo tank rupture. The side shell for the FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis MV22 was designed and built to meet industry standards for FPSO safety in an impact scenario of a 5,000-tonne vessel colliding at 2 metres/sec. Class approvals were obtained.

In this case, the composite construction strengthened the existing structure, enhancing offshore safety and its load-sharing capability to provide enhanced protection for increased offloading and supply berthing operations. SPS was installed directly to the existing side shell plating with minimal disruption to concurrent works. This contrasts with the complexities of installing an internal cofferdam or the construction and fitting of new sponsons: SPS eliminated the need for both.

SPS overlay provided the ideal side shell protection for our FPSO. It was applied quickly, delivered improved impact resistance and reduced our operational costs.

SPS Impact Protection for FPSO Safety

SPS Technology and our Network Partners have extensive experience delivering permanent, class-approved protection and offshore safety repairs.

Please see more about SPS protection for Petrobras, where Sandwich Plate System Compact Double Hull was used to repair six Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels.
