SPS Technology Network Partners from Metalock Brasil Ltda and Megatherm were proud to participate in the UK-Brazil forum at Navalshore 2025, where together they presented the benefits of Sandwich Plate System (SPS) for marine operations, maintenance and repair.
Metalock x Megatherm: bringing SPS to Navalshore 2025
SPS experts Metalock and Megatherm were proud to showcase the benefits of SPS at the Forum Reino Unido & Brasil for Soluções para Operação, Manutenção e Reparo Marítimo, an event designed to foster collaboration between Brazilian and UK industries.
Joining the strategic dialogue with industry experts, leading companies, and government representatives, Metalock’s Robin Lee Kilpatrick and Megatherm’s Sergio Mattozo brought their decades of marine engineering expertise to the conversation. Together, they demonstrated why SPS has become the preferred global solution for both structural repair and new builds, addressing the critical challenges facing Navalshore 2025’s attendees.
”"Presenting SPS Technology at Navalshore allowed us to show how this innovative solution brings safety and efficiency to ship and assets repair. The audience’s engagement confirmed the strong demand for these capabilities in Brazil."
Robin Lee Kilpatrick, Metalock
Highlights: Pipe-laying vessel case study
On this pipe-laying vessel, the team utilised SPS’s Cold Work method to increase impact resistance on the main deck and support heavy equipment. The reinforcement was completed during vessel transit and port calls in Spain and Cyprus, covering 91 m² of carbon steel deck with ABS approval.
Highlights: FPSO Capixaba Cost Benefits
The team also presented an incredible case study where SPS was chosen to reinstate the deck of the FPSO Capixaba.
The client achieved significant indirect cost savings by keeping the cargo tank operational throughout the project. Sandwich Plate System (SPS) eliminated costly downtime and maintained continuous tank utilisation. Conventional ‘crop and renew’ methods require stopping operations, gas-freeing, cleaning, erecting internal scaffolding, and only then beginning steel cutting and replacement, resulting in substantial costs and revenue loss. The innovative SPS Cold Work solution also enhanced personnel safety on board.

”"Sharing the SPS Technology story at Navalshore was a great opportunity to connect with shipowners and yards. The positive response reflects the market’s appetite for proven, cost-effective solutions."
Sergio Mattoza, Megatherm
SPS for Maritime & Offshore Repairs
Robin Lee, Metalock’s Production Supervisor, and Sergio, a skilled metallurgical engineer — both experts in Sandwich Plate System — presented SPS to the forum visitors, highlighting its numerous benefits and the breadth of applications it offers as a structural composite repair solution:
- Deck strengthening and impact resistance
- Hull side protection
- Port infrastructure upgrade
- Noise and vibration reduction
- Advanced fire, blast and ballistic protection
- Anti-piracy reinforcement
SPS: the Sustainable Repair Choice
Ultimately, the best environmental advantage is a product designed for a long life, which is precisely what SPS offers for maritime and offshore vessels. Compared to traditional crop and renew methods, SPS uses:
- 55% less carbon dioxide equivalent
- 60% less new steel
- 70% less welding for typical SPS repair – 100% for Cold Work
- 90% less O2 and acetylene cutting in a typical SPS repair – 100% for Cold Work
- 100% of SPS repairs generate less waste compared to traditional methods
We hope those who attended Robin Lee and Sergio’s presentation found it valuable. If you’d like to learn more about SPS and how it can support your maritime or offshore projects, get in touch with our team today!
”"It was fantastic to see our partners presenting SPS Technology at Navalshore Brazil. Their insights highlighted the real-world value of SPS for the maritime and offshore industry and strengthened our collaboration in the region."
