If you had to preserve a stadium within the confines of a military base whilst simultaneously delivering an unrivalled spectator experience, what material would you choose to meet these criteria?

This was Ewing Cole‘s dilemma as they gear up to transform the historic Michie Stadium, located within the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Keep reading to find out how SPS is tackling these challenges head-on!

The Challenges

Michie Stadium’s unique setting presented several challenges for the construction team. Situated in an active military base, this project requires stringent security protocols and necessary blast-resistant construction standards to keep the 1,300 active-duty soldiers and their families safe. The stadium also lies just 45 miles north of New York City, posing further transportation complexities and costs.

The Solution

EwingCole’s Principal, Kevin Murphy, and Bill McCullough, who are leading the project, recognised the benefits of utilising SPS to address their unique requirements. Why? SPS provides protection—not available in other systems—for extreme weather events, earthquakes, or threat protection as standard.

The SPS Stadia+Arenas System:

  • deflects globally, absorbing impact or blast energy through the membrane of the entire set of terraces.
  • retains its structural integrity without generating fragmentation, allowing safe evacuation or protection.
  • significantly enhances the structure’s performance in extreme events.
  • is modular, reducing construction times and transportation costs.

Our robust and cost-effective system is the safest on the market should a catastrophe occur. That’s why 42300 sq ft / 4000 sq m of SPS stadia decking will enable the creation of Michie Stadium’s new East Stand. It will also enhance spectator comfort and sightlines while preserving this historic venue for the future.

SPS will also facilitate the inclusion of premium seating options, including suites, club sections, and loge boxes, which will help generate crucial incremental revenue for the Army Black Knights.

We're committed to enhancing the fan experience at this iconic venue with SPS stadia decking while preserving its heritage for generations to come. Our team is excited to participate in this project, which is set for completion in summer 2026.
