La Salle University has officially opened its doors to the newly refurbished John Glaser Arena. This ambitious project, completed in October 2024, brought together a vast team of specialist contractors, engineers, and building solutions – including our own SPS Stadia+Arenas System– to ensure its success. But it didn’t come without its challenges…
Taking sports renovations to new heights – literally!
Renovating the 30-year-old Tom Gola Arena was, by no means, a small feat. The aim was to create a comfortable and durable space for spectators and sportspersons alike whilst also maintaining the building’s integrity and character. However, the basketball arena, located on the 3rd floor of La Salle’s campus building, held both structural and logistical obstacles for the build team, including:
- Strict load restrictions on the arena floor required careful consideration of weight during the design process. Traditional, heavy materials, like reinforced concrete, were simply not feasible without exploring extensive reinforcement.
- High-traffic durability was essential. The renovated structure needed to handle heavy footfall whilst being comfortable and visually appealing.
- Maximising seating capacity required efficient space management, especially as the arena would double as a multi-use venue.
- With the Explorers’ basketball season approaching, the project had a tight deadline, which demanded careful scheduling among contractors and material suppliers to complete the renovation on time.
Overcoming build challenges with SPS.
How did the build team overcome these challenges? Led by SPST Network Partner Freedom Enterprise, Inc., the team took the time to investigate the benefits of SPS. That made all the difference!
- SPS is significantly lighter than traditional materials and yet has a high strength-to-weight ratio. This means our structural composite could provide the strength needed for the arena terraces without exceeding the floor load limits!
- SPS Stadia+Arena Systems boasts exceedingly high durability and comfort for spectators. It absorbs dynamic loads well and is ideal for high-traffic use.
- SPS’s modular and prefabricated design simplifies the construction process and offers integration with other venue solutions like retractable seating.
- SPS panels arrive factory-finished and so reduces on-site construction time and labor. This enabled fast installation of the terraces at the John Glaser Arena and helped the project meet its deadline ahead of the season opener.
A huge victory for the Explorers!
Suffice it to say, the John Glaser renovation project completed as planned, allowing the La Salle Explorers to kick off basketball season in style. Marking the grand reopening of the venue, the team went on to secure an incredible win against The Eagles who lost 65-52!

Highlighting our partners, D4S
Amongst the incredible team that made this renovation a reality, its success was powered by the meticulous work by SPST’s new strategic partner, Design4Structures, who bought their expertise in advanced 3D technical design. Their modelling allowed the build team to visualise and solve for each detail before construction began.
