Utilising SPS composite bridge deck, a permanent rural bridge offering safe, reliable passage for pedestrians, bikes and wheelchair users was installed in the idyllic Fürstenberger Stadtpark. Also home to important biodiversity, the new bridge needed to meet calls to safeguard it.
The new footbridge was designed and specified by SPST Network Partners EIFFAGE SEH. Consulting firm IGS Ingenieure prepared the tender, with the on-site construction carried out by construction company SMM from Fürstenberg/Havel. The SPS composite bridge deck was manufactured directly by the SPS Technology team.
The design team needed to balance the need for public safety and access to the park’s restaurant and marinas, while protecting the area for local fish and small animals. The Iserdiek is one of several small rivers that connect the Schwedtsee and Röblinsee, homes to unique biodiversity. The new structural composite bridge deck replaces an ageing corroded and stepped pedestrian bridge with a long-term solution that lets local wildlife flourish.
SPS has been used in maritime and offshore settings as a repair solution for corrosion, which is constantly monitored to keep vessels and assets in safe working order for as long as possible.
Eiffage SEH’s Thomas Stihl, a long-time SPS expert, saw the opportunity to put the best properites of SPS composite bridge decking to good use in this scenario. Its slenderness means the depth of the deck does not encroach any more than necessary on the canal below while still delivering the strength necessary to safely carry all of the park’s users, regardless of how they travel. Having previously delivered Luxembourg City’s ‘Pont Rouge’, Thomas understands the versatility of SPS and how this composite bridge decking material behaves, and had this to say:
”We decided to use SPS for the Iserdieck bridge because of its slim and light design. The underside of the bridge is flat without stiffeners, which offers the best performance for corrosion protection. No edges and space for dirt and moisture-producing corrosion environment. All this in addition to a noise-absorbing floor behaviour. All best for this application.
