In 2022, our partner Marine Offshore Management undertook deck reinstatement repairs with SPS on container ‘feeder’ vessel, Jona Sophie.

The Jona Sophie, a container ship operated by Reederei Stefan Patjens GmbH & Co, underwent a deck repair at Desan Shipyard in Tuzla, Istanbul.

In an area directly above the Engine Room, corrosion on the Jona Sophie’s 1st Deck plating had exceeded class limits. A traditional crop-and-renew repair would have caused significant operational disruption. Instead, our network partners Marine Offshore Management applied SPS 8-20-E to two areas of the deck.

This solution reinstated the original plating and provided long-term protection against further deterioration. In total, seven cavities were treated, covering approximately 61 m² [657 ft²] of deck area.

The team used the existing corroded plating as one side of the SPS applied for Jona Sophie’s deck reinstatement, a more sustainable choice compared to traditional crop and renew.

Still earning at 30: SPS makes it happen

Jona Sophie works a regional loop through the Eastern Mediterranean with short one-to-two-day hops between ports rather than ocean crossings, unlike large container ships that run long-haul routes and call at a handful of major hub ports. ‘Feeder’ vessels pick up the slack, carrying containers from that hub out to smaller regional ports and hauling return cargo back.

Following its deck reinstatement, the Jona Sophie maintains an active schedule. With the right maintenance, regionally focused feeders often keep working well past the expected decommission age: the economics favour squeezing extra years out of an older vessel rather than replacing it.
