The Stuyvesant Hopper Dredger is a TSHD-type vessel, holding approximately 15,000 metric tons of sand, that required significant repairs and reinstatement in 2022 so it could continue its dredging work for years to come.

With its life-extending benefits, SPS was chosen to  repair the vessel’s key structural components. SPS Technology’s long-standing network partner, Marine Offshore Management, delivered this critical dry dock ship repair using our structural sandwich plate and ultimately led the construction work through to completion.

This project involved the application of SPS across several areas of the dredger, including:

  • Reinstatement of the poop deck and boat deck
  • Reinforcement of the bulkhead
  • Side keelsons in the hopper well area

Overlay repairs using SPS utilise the existing corroded plating as part of the repair. For the Stuyvesant, the team retained the original deck plating, meaning minimal disruption to sub-deck services and insulation. To further minimise disruption to onboard systems, MOM implemented a ‘low-heat-input’ SPS solution, which included perimeter bars fixed with structural adhesive in select areas, preventing heat transfer to the original plating. Down-hand welding and simplified steel working techniques ensured fast and safe execution.

ABS and the US Coast Guard approved the repairs.

The combined SPS Technology and MOM team is returning to the Stuyvesant in 2025 for more SPS repairs!

Dry Dock Ship Repair with SPS

These dry dock ship repairs were conducted in Alabama for the vessel’s operator, the Dutra Group, an industry leader in dredging services. In total, Marine Offshore Management installed 365m² (3,930 ft²) of SPS as part of this ‘low hot work’ repair.

SPS’s life-extending applications ensured this powerhouse of a vessel could continue its heavy-duty operations for many years to come. SPS Technology also offers an alternative to traditional dry dock repair and maintenance: SPS COLD WORK. Using detailed surveys of the necessary repairs on offshore assets, our sandwich plate can be manufactured on-shore for no-hot-work offshore installation on in-service assets.
