Roll-on roll-off cargo decks are some of the hardest-working surfaces in the maritime world: heavy loads bring disproportionately large impacts that result in dishing, corrosion and damage. Cargo deck reinstatement with SPS means these work-horses on the motorway of the sea stay in service as long as possible.

The cargo deck reinstatement of the M/V Norsky saw the delivery of a remarkable 2,455 m² [26,425 ft²] of Sandwich Plate System, SPS, by our Network Partner, SRC at the Fayard A/S shipyard in Denmark. The team used 157 tonnes of steel, demonstrating the scale of the project.

This Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) project saw the installation of SPS as an overlay solution on the existing deck structure, covering more than 127m of the deck our structural composite, SPS, on the M/V Norsky.  Comprised of both SRC and SPS Technology staff, the entire team ensured continued quality control throughout the demanding programme.

Continuous working sees the Norsky return to service in record time

Underscoring the commitment to meeting tight deadlines, a dedicated 70-person project team was formed and operations were carried out by creating two gangs. Despite being exposed to particularly foul weather on the open Upper Deck, the team worked continuously to ensure maximum efficiency.

The permanent repair was completed in just 25 days including mobilisation and demobilisation phases. The reinstated deck was built to both better than as-built strength and flatness.  Class society approvals came from DNV.

The M/V Norsky is a Finnish-flagged Ro-Ro cargo vessel built in 1999. With an overall length of 180 meters and breadth of 25.2 meters, the  M/V Norsky can carry a maximum of 11,400 metric tons of cargo across three decks.

SPS was subsequently chosen to renew the deck of the Norsky’s sister vessel, the  Ro-Ro cargo ferry MS Norstream.

Well executed project, by a good team with remarkable work ethic and solution-oriented attitude! Keep up the good work!
