In 2017, SPS was used as part of a key project on the Saipem FDS2 to strengthen 91m2 of main deck onboard this state-of-the-art pipe laying and heavy-lift crane vessel. This main deck structural reinforcement project was led by SPS Technology Network Partners Marine Offshore Management (MOM), whose application of SPS whilst the vessel was in service enhanced the deck’s structural integrity to withstand heavy operations and reduce damage by dropped objects.

SPS was chosen for this project to:

  • Increase the vessel’s deck impact resistance.
  • Allow for storing heavy equipment and winches for pipe-laying operations.
  • Complete the reinforcement within the vessel’s limited maintenance window – whilst in transit!
  • Adhere to regulatory requirements to ensure the vessel’s continued ABS certification.
  • Deliver a cost-effective solution without compromising on quality or functionality.

Main Deck Structural Reinforcement On-the-Move

MOM’s team, in collaboration with SPS Technology Network Partner SRC, boarded the vessel in Spain to carry out surface preparation and install the SPS cavities during its transit to Cyprus. The team then completed the injection of the elastomer core into all seven cavities in just one day, forming the SPS sandwich plate repair just in time for the vessel to reach its destination!
