In 2020, SPS Technology teamed up with Marine Offshore Management to tackle a critical offshore reinstatement aboard FPSO Petrojarl Foinaven using SPS.  The asset required a side shell, hull crack repair that was both robust and fast, one executed offshore without disrupting operations.

Moored in the harsh ‘West of Shetland’ environment, the Petrojarl Foinaven had already done 23 years of service when inspectors discovered cracks in two longitudinal stiffeners near the FPSO’s forward bracket connection

The MOM team addressed and sealed the cracks, then applied Sandwich Plate System from inside the hull, welding a 12mm top plate to the framing members, eliminating the need for water-backed welding procedures. This formed a secure SPS cavity, which was then injected with elastomer to complete the repair.

As a result, this offshore SPS application repaired the hull with minimal disruption to vessel operations. More importantly, it eliminated future leakage risks in the diesel oil tank, safeguarding both the asset’s integrity and its continued operation. The permanent repair allowed the Foinaven to stay in service for a further two years before it was decommissioned.

"DNV confirmed that SPS significantly reduced fatigue stress in the side shell, with a 95% decrease in stress range. Their assessment also showed the SPS panel effectively minimised crack growth risk over a 20-year service life, even under dynamic loading conditions."
