Together, the SPS Technology and SRC team have delivered three in-service ship repair projects using SPS for Carnival Cruises onboard the Queen Mary 2. Between 2017 and 2021, tween-deck repairs were undertaken during scheduled cruises with  inspection and approval by Lloyd’s Register on both sides of the Atlantic.

→ September 2017: In the limited tween deck space, the team applied an SPS Overlay to restore a corroded section of the Open Tween Deck. To ensure safe repair during service, the team applied a low-heat-input SPS solution. During the voyage, they completed the elastomer injections to fill 24 cavities across approximately 88m².

→ September 2018: On the return voyage, the team reinforced corroded deck plating with SPS in two critical areas. Fourteen cavities were filled in total, covering approximately 48m² total.

→ October 2021: Whilst in service between Southampton, UK and Brest, France, the team applied SPS 8-25-Existing to the Tween Deck.  Twenty cavities were filled, covering a total area of approximately 63m².

Notably, the team completed all three repairs while the vessel remained in service without interrupting the vessel’s schedule or passengers.

The team was able to complete the repair under challenging circumstances whilst the vessel was in-service. In order to not impact our guests’ cruise experience, restrictions were placed on when works could be undertaken which the team worked around delivering the project on time with minimal disruption.

For nearly three decades, SPS Technology has delivered repairs to assets and vessels using Sandwich Plate System (SPS). Major Classification Societies approve of this structural composite, which creates repairs stronger than the original structure. Repairs with SPS consistently endure until vessel decommissioning.

Uniquely, we implement SPS repairs of any size using Cold Work (No Hot Work) and low-heat methods, keeping your personnel safe while maintaining project schedules.

SPS Technology delivers in-service ship repair worldwide through our extensive SPS Technology Partner Network, servicing your vessel wherever it operates.
