The new Reggie Smith Softball Complex saw Crawford Architects and the construction team deliver exceptional quality in every detail of the University of San Diego’s Toreros softball complex – including specifying SPS for the stadia decking!

The complex features a new stadium with seating for over 380 fans — expanding to 500 seats for regional contests — which was built using 2686 ft² [250m²] of SPS, a high-quality alternative to more traditional aluminum bleachers.

SPS is fast becoming the stadia decking of choice in California. SPS’ seismic resilience means it can withstand earthquakes, the weather and the most demanding fans, such as the Earthquakes’ Ultras.

SPST created an advanced 3D model with Design4Structures, which ensured the design team was coordinated through detailed design and was the basis for the prefabrication of the stadia decking. The components were prefinished and the correct size when they arrived on site, translating to an impressive speed of installation: all of the SPS terraces, vom walls and aisle steps were erected in less than a week!

Exceptional quality facilities for the team

And state-of-the-art viewing for the fans, too. Everyone has been thought about in the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

The team building delivers for the squad before, during and after the games. In addition to high-end locker rooms and user training areas, it offers a 4,500 sq. ft. space for film review sessions, team meals, studying, and community events. The team building’s ‘hype room’  acts as an entry/exit tunnel for USD players and ensures they hit the field ready for action.

The softball complex also includes new bullpens and sunken dugouts, a press box, room for concessions, the latest cutting-edge Dura Edge Collegiate Infield and, in right field, the iconic USD Green wall.
