At the historic Owosso Speedway, the new owners are ‘Slowing down to do it right’ in the speedway redevelopment of this central Michigan short-track raceway. Delivering an unparalleled racing environment, Rex and Sarah Wheeler chose ‘state-of-the-art’ SPS stadia decking for the new grandstand.

Built in 1939, Owosso Speedway fell into disrepair before being bought in 2022 by the Wheelers. Since then, they’ve committed themselves to the rejuvenation of Owosso: both helping the local area and keeping interest in racing alive for decades. With that goal in mind, the speedway redevelopment has eight planned stages—and a predicted investment of $180 million— including 37,750 ft2 [3506 m2] of SPS Stadia+Arenas terraces.

In the spring of 2025, Phase Two of the speedway redevelopment saw the relocation of spectator facilities to the North side of the track. The new ‘top-tier’ SPS grandstand increases capacity to 8,000 spectators at each event of the five-month racing calendar, with improved sightlines that elevate fans’ race-day experience.

But the new grandstand offers fans even more than a great view of the action. Sandwich Plate System stadia decking has a high strength-to-weight ratio, which accommodates longer spans. As a result of the longer spans, there are fewer columns and more usable space under the grandstand.

Crucially, unlike aluminum stadia decking, the SPS Stadia+Arenas System is watertight: the space underneath the grandstand is adaptable, whether for concessions or – in Owosso’s case — a place for fans to huddle during a rain event or storm.

Additionally, prefabricated SPS terraces come factory-finished with OSHA-approved anti-slip surfaces, which contributes to easier ongoing maintenance and upkeep.

Aspiring to have the US’ nicest, safest short track

There are over 900 short-track racing venues in the US, with the popularity of this grassroots sport growing. Owosso’s 0.375 mi, progressively banked oval short track is relatively unique in that it can accommodate two- and three-wide racing.

Phase One of the speedway redevelopment saw multiple tech advances improving the racing experience at Owosso, including the installation of SAFER barriers, improved lighting in the backstretch and repaving the oval track to make it ‘very fast and super smooth.’

While Phases One and Two addressed the immediate needs of racers and fans, the longer term plan sees Owosso becoming a year-round destination. In addition to expanding spectator seating to 20,000, there are plans for a campground and potentially a hotel and event center.
