Originally designed in 2003, Lincoln Financial Field’s first ticketed event was a soccer match between Manchester United and FC Barcelona. Despite already being a FIFA-compliant NFL stadium, it needed an upgrade in advance of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The original design for the stadium, from architects NBBJ and engineers Arup, featured semi-permanent concrete lower-bowl seats at all four corners of the iconic home of the Philadelphia Eagles. Heavy, as well as difficult to move and store when taken out for soccer matches, the venue decided to replace the removable concrete terrace sections in favor of Sandwich Plate System.
The SPS Stadia + Arena System is a pre-fabricated, modular solution for terracing. After thoroughly surveying the original design, the SPST team manufactured semi-permanent terraces to replace the old concrete units. In total, the team fabricated seven rows of SPS.
Construction crews executed a corner extraction project, removing sections of lower-bowl seating to widen the field and provide mandatory player safety runouts. From there, replaced it with 5,565 ft² [517 m²] of permanent and removable SPS Stadia + Arenas System terraces, along with front and vomitory walls made of SPS.
The top two rows form a ‘permanent’ section, anchored directly to the existing concrete wall and slab. Meanwhile, the ‘removable’ portion includes five rows of SPS paired with an adjustable-height steel frame. To manage water effectively, the team built drainage into the first row of both the permanent and semi-removable terrace sections.
Finally, the team tailored the existing seats and new handrails to match the existing conditions.
