Lumen Field faced a defining challenge: fitting a regulation FIFA pitch into an NFL stadium without losing a single seat. The SPS Stadia + Arenas System delivered the solution, helping Seattle’s iconic stadium rise to meet the FIFA World Cup 2026 stadium requirements.

To comply with FIFA World Cup 2026 stadium pitch size requirements, two corners of Seattle’s Lumen Field, known as Seattle Stadium for the World Cup competition, underwent significant structural transformation including the partial demolition of existing stands.

In their place, 12 precision-engineered Sandwich Plate System (SPS) semi-permanent terrace modules, totalling 807 ft² [75m²], were commissioned to replace the original concrete terraces. Each module features a steel frame with adjustable height, paired with SPS terraces and walls, enabling a seamless and efficient transition between the new and legacy bowl configurations. All without sacrificing any spectator seats.

Delivering continuity with SPS Semi-permanent terraces

Every detail was carefully considered to ensure visual continuity across both areas, from matching seat designs and handrails to a unified paint colour scheme, delivering a finish that is as coherent as it is practical.

Along with Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Lumen Field has tied for best stadium of the 2026 FIFA World Cup according to the New York Times!
