In 2009, Architects Workshop Ltd (AWL) and Innovate Stadia Ltd transformed the National Exhibition Centre indoor arena using the SPS Stadia + Arenas System: redesigning, enlarging and completely refitting it into a reconfigurable venue built for diverse events and shows. Today, that venue is known as bp pulse LIVE.
Adding 8,000 permanent seats boosted total capacity to 15,685, with the design team installing 4,200m² [45,208 ft²] of Sandwich Plate System (SPS) stadium decking terraces. They chose the SPS Stadia + Arenas System because it needs fewer supporting columns, freeing up space for concessions and services beneath the new stands.
The team ordered, delivered and installed the entire terracing and seating system in just 12 weeks.
Renovating an indoor arena means working with lighter plant and smaller cranes within the existing building envelope, so the team lifted the SPS terraces into position using a vacuum lift to navigate the confined space and restricted crane access.
Because the prefabricated, modular Stadia+Arena system requires no wet trades, smaller crews could install it using standard steel detailing for every structural connection. Workers even lifted the aisle steps into place by hand, while a rail-mounted seating system sped up installation of the seats.
Planning was submitted for another renovation to the venue in 2020 but was delayed due the Covid-19 pandemic.
”Using SPS Terraces helped to ensure that our new arena was ready for the start of our season, the horse of the year show, in October and has created more space for concessions and services under the new stands.

If you would like to find out more about how SPS can be used for indoor arena renovation, Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion and ACU’s Moody Coliseum are two more great examples of indoor arena renovation using the SPS Stadium+Arena System.
