In the fall of 2022, following extensive Finite Element Analysis carried out by ABSG Consulting Inc. and SPS Technology engineeers, Marine Offshore Management (MOM) undertook the port and starboard pontoon deck reinstatement of the mobile semi-submersible drilling unit Dada Gorgud using Sandwich Plate System (SPS).

After identifying corrosion beyond Class limits in specific areas of the Port and Starboard pontoons, Caspian Drilling Co. Ltd identified SPS as its preferred repair method. Following requests from the Class society ABS, SPST used local (sub-) models to assess the implications of the repairs.  The results of the Finite Element Analysis confirmed that SPS delivers positive effects on structural behaviour, reducing stresses and reinstating stiffness. As expected, no stress concentrations or unpredicted stress redistribution appeared anywhere around the repairs undertaken with SPS.

SPS offers greater time savings

SPS Technology Network Partners MOM were chosen to install the Sandwich Plate System and undertake the pontoon deck reinstatement. Experts in SPS delivery, the team applied SPS 12-20-existing across 465 m2 [5000 ft2] of the asset’s deck, effectively shielding them from further deterioration. By reusing the existing corroded plating, and avoiding intrusive crop and renew, the Dada Gorgud reinstatement was faster and more sustainable.

Crucially, the entire operation took place from above the hull, relying on simple steel working techniques and mostly down-hand welding. As a result, using SPS slashed the repair schedule compared to the traditional ‘crop-and-replace’ alternative. Because it leaves the existing structure fully intact, using SPS avoided the costly, time-consuming and unsustainable processes that conventional methods demand.

The SPS Technology Partner Network

The SPS Technology Partner Network ensures that only the most qualified teams deliver SPS for projects around the world. The team from Marine Offshore Management has delivered tens of thousands of SPS on projects as varied as the floating dry dock Careen and FDS2 Saipem to the trawl deck of the AQVIQ.
